What Does ICYMI Mean And Other Common Text Acronyms to Make You Crazy

What Does ICYMI Mean And Other Common Text Acronyms to Make You Crazy Im not a lover of text acronyms. Heres a true story. When I first began to use e-mail, people kept typing LOL in their responses. One day, I asked one of them what LOL actually meant, and they got back with Laughs out loud! I must have been feeling a bit grouchy that day because I responded: No need to be sarcastic, pal, just TELL me! I kid you not. Since then, I have developed my own range of obscure text acronyms as a secret form of revenge. Try these if you like. Unless people have been writing to me, they will surely be baffled: CHKL = chuckle GGL = giggle GFW = guffaw TTR = titter SNRT = snort But were not here to discuss my off-the-wall, obscure text acronyms. Instead, well talk about the other kind the ones people use a whole lot. AAAAA = American Association against Acronym Abuse. Im joining! Where do I sign up? B2B = business to business. There are various permutations: B2C (consumer), B2A (anyone), B2G (government) you get the picture. BF = best friend or boyfriend. Guys, be careful with this one unless you actually do have a boyfriend. If you do, thats just fine. If you dont well, just saying. BFF = best friends forever. Someone, please bring me a barf bag. BRB = be right back. Im always tempted to tell people who use this not to break wind in my presence without at least excusing themselves. BTW = by the way. Sigh. Guilty. I use it. I hate myself, but I still use it. FOMO = fear of missing out. And sadly, thats why I try to keep up with these things. I seriously dont want another lol incident! FWIW = for what its worth. A lot like IMHO, see below. FYI = for your information. Alternative interpretation: waste of time, ignore it. GIGO = garbage in, garbage out. I think it may predate text speak, but I prefer the long form. Call me old-fashioned and see if I care. ICYMI = in case you missed it. Yes. I missed it. If you had written that out in full, I wouldnt have. ILY = I love you. Please slap anyone who cant be bothered to use the full form. Really! IMO = in my opinion. At least it doesnt even pretend to be humble. IMHO = in my humble opinion, and believe me, its never humble. People who say IMHO are just plain opinionated. IRL = in real life. You can just tell someone is going to say something annoyingly patronizing when they use that one. MSG = message. I always thought it stood for monosodium glutamate. See how ignorant I am? NP = no problem. Again, its infectious. The proper response would be LTT (Learn to type another of my creations), but Im afraid Im one of the culprits. OMG = oh my god. Guilty! I even say OMG sometimes. Its invariably followed by a sense of self-loathing. TMI = too much information. Well, if the phrase too much information is something you cant get your head around, no bloody wonder. TTYL = talk to you later. OMG if you are going to TTML in that tone of acronym, Im not sure if I will handle it. TX, THX or THKS = thanks. Now IMHO, if youre going to use four of the six letters the word thanks consists of, you may as well LTT and include the two vowels. As for the X lets not even go there! #LTS = learn to spell! TXT = text. I dont think that saving one letter is worth it, but there it is. Of course, this is just a broad sampling. Digits are (unfortunately) popular, particularly 4 (for) and 2 (to), so we have 2nite, 2day, 2morrow, 4U, B4, 4eva the hair on the back of my neck is rising, my nails are growing longer, a deep-throated growl is rising up from my belly. Aha! H2O! A sure-fire way to cool down. But just try telling me ILY 4eva, and I swear, Ill have a hissy fit thats second to none and go looking for someone with more poetry in their soul and the ability to spell. FWIW its entirely possible Im the only one who doesnt think these things are cute which is why I am patronizing you with this particular blog post. Then again, youre actually reading it, so perhaps you are also mystified by text abbreviations. You may notice that I didnt include favorites such as WTF, but I dislike excessive use of asterisks almost as much as I dislike text acronyms, so most of the acronyms containing the letter F have been excluded. I will leave them up to your imagination. (Photo courtesy of Jonas Bengtsson)

Proceedings of the 15th Annual Conference of the Association for Chinese Economics Studies Australia (ACESA) Guanxi Neglect at the Roaring Dragon in South-west China: The demise of an International Management Contract Stephen Grainger1 University of Western Australia ‘guanxi neglect – neglecting opportunities to show respect towards guanxi relationships’ Abstract This paper introduces the concept of guanxi neglect through a case study that describes the takeover of a formerly Chinese managed hotel by a western based, international hotel management company. The original Hotel was a four-storey, rectangular, grey structure built in 1960 in a dull Russian style. By 1993, the provincial government had funded a new extension and the Hotel now consisted of two parts: the old four-storey section joined by a modern sixteen-storey extension perched on a hill behind the old Russian. There was a contrast in the standard of accommodation. Room rates were cheaper in the old section and so it attracted Chinese visitors searching for quality economy accommodation. Visiting government officials and higher-end customers on the other hand felt more comfortable in the newer and naturally more expensive section. There were two guarded entrances to the Hotel, one on each level. A series of stairways, elevators and a warren of banquet rooms, hallways, storage areas, offices, cafeterias, and a laundry untidily connected the two buildings. The Silver Bullet free essay sample

While people refer to a dog as man’s best friend, I have found that my most dependable friend has been my car. But this romance between my 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier and I didn’t begin with love at first sight. As a matter of fact, this friendship started off with a lot of animosity. It was January, and I was a 16 year old with a plastic ID that represented the key to the open road. I was just missing one important item, and that was a car. Fortunately, my giving parents promised me a vehicle. I began my own car shopping at a well-known website, Lamborguini.com. I found plenty of safe, reputable cars that my parents could trust with their eldest and only son in the driver’s seat. Little did I know that my parents’ search for cars started at Craigslist, where they specifically searched for cars under $1,500. When my parents brought home the silver, 4-cylinder, stick shift, two-door 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier with 115 thousand miles, I continually thanked them but it was with a small sense of reluctance. We will write a custom essay sample on The Silver Bullet or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While I expressed appreciation for the Cavalier, in the back of my mind I began scrutinizing my new vehicle for its imperfections. I ended up finding aspects of my Chevrolet that I initially tagged as imperfections, but these were the characteristics of my car that I have grown to love. Each trait of uniqueness in my Cavalier represents my personality from head to toe. Specifically, my stick shift Chevrolet Cavalier tends to produce a bumpy ride. Therefore, the stick shift of my car can equate to my problem-solving abilities. No matter the difficulty of a challenge, I always persevere so that I may complete anything that I have started. Looking at my heat and air conditioning on my Chevrolet Cavalier, I quickly discovered a minor glitch within the power of the fan that blows the air into the car. The problem was that my heat would only work if I had the fan turned all the way up. So it was either freeze in winter, or I would have to endure a 20 mph blast of heat. But as I continued to deal with this malfunction, I found another similarity between my â€Å"silver bullet† and I. As I had mentioned, a task I have began is as good as done. But the thing is, I don’t just like to simply complete an obstacle I encounter. I want to fulfill a task with my utmost ability and efficiency. Like my heater in the Cavalier, my fan of work-ethic only runs at its highest potential. Finally, the fact that I had to manually roll down the windows proved to be a bit of an inconvenience. Nevertheless, I found yet another resemblance between the timeless Chevrolet Cavalier and myself. Like the windows of my car, my attitude towards everything I do is done through my own abilities. I am never looking for shortcuts, because I always want to learn and better myself as an individual. So if a certain assignment calls for rolling up your sleeves, getting dirty, and applying critical thinking skills. You better believe that I am always up for that sort of challenge. Through t he quirky attributes of the Chevrolet Cavalier, I discovered my own identity and what I am capable of. I am dependable, yet sporty. I am all business, yet I have my share of fun. I try to look good, yet I don’t mind getting dirty. Basically, not even a dating site could match a better couple than my Cavalier and me.

The First, Second, Third Punic Wars Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The First, Second, Third Punic Wars - Essay Example The outcome of the wars established the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire as one of the greatest in the whole of history. The influence of the Punic Wars on Western Civilization The Punic Wars were important also for their influence on subsequent diplomatic and military strategies. Many theories pertaining to political and military strategy were conceived and codified during these three wars. These theories continued to be perused by later generations of leaders. The Punic Wars were also important for their impact on cultural and philosophical development in Europe. Since the Western Mediterranean region was such a cultural and intellectual melting pot, gaining control of it conferred prestige on the Roman Empire. The leaders of the Empire would in turn encourage the growth of arts and culture. It is no coincidence that the rise of the Roman Empire through victories in the Punic Wars happened during the Hellenistic era. It is as if the explosion of art, literature, philosophy, thea tre, architecture, music and science in Hellenistic Greece is a response to the ascendency of the Roman Empire through the Punic Wars. First Punic War: Winner, Loser, Gains and Losses At the beginning of the First Punic War, Rome only possessed a modest navy. On the other hand, Carthage held the most competent and experienced navy in the region. Since Rome can access Sicily only through its navy, Carthage was able to quell its initial forays. Though set back by these early defeats, the Roman military strategists rose to the occasion and started building a substantial fleet of ships to neutralize Carthaginian naval power. This enterprise proved to be a success and eventually Sicily and other contested territories was conceded by Carthage to Rome. The outcome of the First Punic War established Rome as a considerable imperial power in the Mediterranean region. As part of the reparations, Rome acquired a fair share of Carthage’s wealth, so much so that an indignant Carthaginian l eadership would carry its scars into the future. These hurt pride and perceived injustice would be the backdrop for further conflicts between the two empires. Rome and Carthage made several trade pacts after the war and they even agreed to an alliance to suppress King Pyrrhus of Epirus. As part of the war indemnity, Carthage was asked to release thousands of Roman prisoners of war. Large amounts of silver were also included as reparation. But Carthage’s economy and military were so devastated by the war that it was unable to fulfil its post-war pacts. This led to resentment from Rome and made further wars inevitable. Second Punic War: Winner, Loser, Gains and Losses The Second Punic War followed a similar pattern to that of the first. Although Carthage under the imaginative command of Hannibal made impressive forays into Roman held territory, the superior organization and adaptability of Roman forces eventually proved decisive. Hannibal’s crossing of Alps with an Eleph ant-ridden battalion was an impressive feat. Hannibal was able to dominate the country outside Rome on the back of his superior infantry. But the crucial fortress of Rome the city was never to be breached. Acting against Hannibal’s progress was the resolute support Rome received from its allies. Hence Carthage was once again defeated by the superior diplomacy, combat tactics and foresight of Roman leadership. But unlike the First Punic Wa

Legal Provisions Concerned with Business Units :: Business Management Companies Essays

Legal Provisions Concerned with Business Units Our client is in the process of forming a company. She wishes to avoid personal liability upon any contracts she may enter into on behalf of the proposed company. Our job is to design a report to explain the legal provisions concerned with the formation, management and dissolution of business units. The report will identify the relevant legal principles, which can influence the choice of business unit. Explain the differences in the regulatory approach adopted for partnerships and registered companies and describe the procedures for the dissolution of business units. At the end of the report we will advise our client what type of company would be best suited to her needs. There will also be a presentation to go with the report highlighting the main points. 2.TYPES OF COMPANY There are many different types of business unit. Each is formed by a group of people with a common aim. Britain has what is known as a mixed economy where goods and services are supplied by both private and public sector organisations, as shown in the following diagram: Private Enterprise Sole Trader Partnerships Limited Companies Co-operatives Private Public Retail Producer Public Enterprise Public corporations Government Departments Local Authorities The private sector/enterprise is the term used to describe all businesses which are owned by individuals or groups of individuals and run essentially for profit. About half of all trading in Britain is controlled by private sector organisations. The other half known as the public sector/enterprise are businesses which are owned and controlled by the government or Local Authorities and run for the benefit of the country. The sector this report is concerned with is the Private Sector. 2.1 SOLE TRADER This is the oldest, simplest and therefore most common form of business unit. A sole trader is one who conducts their business by themselves either using their own name or a business name. This is somebody who is self-employed and who usually starts a business with capital from their savings or by borrowing from friends or a bank. Capital is the money which every business needs to enable it to set up and operate, for example to buy premises, equipment, stock and pay wages. The main advantage is that you can be flexible. You don’t need to discuss with others (e.g. partners and directors) how you are going to run the business. You also have less paperwork. A sole trader is not necessarily a one-person business and may have many employees or branches. However, the business is owned by one person and it is they who receive the profits. ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES - Business affairs can be kept private except for completing tax

Dino Death Trap

The film â€Å"Dino Death Trap† at the National Geographic Channel is documentary movie which provides information about extraordinary fossil found in Gobi Desert. Therefore, the actions in the film took place millions of years ago. The scientists are showed to be quite surprised when finding fossils in the middle of China. They claimed that petrified bones of fossils belonged to unknown species. Moreover, they were in odd positions layered on each other in one single rock. Researchers said that two of the found creatures belonged to same specie being the ancestors of Tyrannosaurus rex, but they were entailed with more usable forearms and pliable claws, whereas Tyrannosaurus rex was two-fingered flippers which were completely useless. Those fossils had delicate crest on their heads which were likely to be used for protection and butting.Nevertheless, the scientists look surprised because the fossils were likely to provide collective link to Jurassic Park. It is known that after Jurassic dinosaurs were of massive size, whereas before that period they were relatively small. In other words, dinosaurs before Jurassic were of turkey’s size. The God Desert provided certain answers, as we see in the film. One of the most interesting creatures is the crested feller which scientists called ‘crested dragon’.Scientists argued that fossil appeared to be the missing evolutionary link between the parts of Jurassic period. Other found species allowed researchers to follow evolutionary tree, but pterodactyl and stegosaurus proved to be a mystery to be solved. Scientists wondered what had caused dinosaurs to die at the same time. Scientists believed that the found fossils would shed more light on how dinosaurs evolutionary grew to be larger.

Lloyd Augustus Hall - Chemist and Inventor

An industrial food chemist, Lloyd Augustus Hall revolutionized the meatpacking industry with his development of curing salts for the processing and reserving of meats. He developed a technique of flash-driving (evaporating) and a technique of sterilization with ethylene oxide which is still used by medical professionals today. Earlier Years Lloyd Augustus Hall was born in Elgin, Illinois, on June 20, 1894.  Halls grandmother came to Illinois via the Underground Railroad  when she was 16. Halls grandfather came to Chicago in 1837 and was one of the founders of the Quinn Chapel  A.M.E. Church. In 1841, he was the churchs first pastor. Hall’s parents, Augustus and Isabel, both graduated high school. Lloyd was born in Elgin but his family moved to  Aurora, Illinois, which is where he was raised. He graduated in 1912 from East Side High School in Aurora. After graduation, he studied   pharmaceutical chemistry  at  Northwestern University,  earning a bachelor of science degree, followed by a  masters  degree from the  University of Chicago. At Northwestern, Hall met Carroll L. Griffith, who with his father, Enoch L. Griffith, founded  Griffith Laboratories. The Griffiths later hired Hall as their chief chemist. After finishing college, Hall was hired by the  Western Electric Company  after a phone interview. But the company refused to hire Hall when they learned he was black. Hall then began working as a chemist for the Department of Health in  Chicago  followed by a job as chief chemist with the John Morrell Company. During  World War I, Hall served with the  United States Ordnance Department  where he was promoted to Chief Inspector of Powder and Explosives. Following the war, Hall married Myrrhene Newsome and they moved to Chicago where he worked for the Boyer Chemical Laboratory, again as a chief chemist. Hall then became president and chemical director for Chemical Products Corporations consulting laboratory. In 1925, Hall took a position with Griffith Laboratories where he remained for 34 years. Inventions Hall invented new ways to preserve food. In 1925, at Griffith Laboratories, Hall invented his processes for preserving meat using sodium chloride and nitrate and nitrite crystals.   This process was known as flash-drying. Hall also pioneered the use of antioxidants. Fats and oils spoil when exposed to oxygen in the air. Hall used lecithin, propyl gallate, and ascorbyl palmite as antioxidants, and invented a process to prepare the antioxidants for food preservation. He invented a process to sterilized spices using ethylenoxide gas, an insecticide. Today, the use of preservatives has been reexamined. Preservatives have been linked to many health issues. Retirement After retiring from Griffith Laboratories in 1959, Hall consulted for the  Food and Agriculture Organization  of the  United Nations. From 1962 to 1964, he was on the American  Food for Peace  Council. He died in 1971 in  Pasadena,  California. He was awarded several honors during his lifetime, including  honorary degrees  from  Virginia State University,  Howard University  and the  Tuskegee Institute,  and in 2004 he was inducted into the  National Inventors Hall of Fame.
